The use of drones is becoming more and more widespread in Ireland and potential operators should be aware of their responsibilities to make sure that they are operated safely.
A few questions that come up regularly are
What’s the difference between RPAS and model aircraft?
- Model aircraft are defined by international aviation bodies, such as ICAO and EASA, as “Any small aircraft which is being used for the sole purpose of recreational flying.”
- When you use your RPAS for recreational purposes, you must follow the same rules that are required for the operation of model aircraft as laid out in Rockets and Small Aircraft Order S.I. 25 of 2000.
- When you use your RPAS for any other purpose, including for commercial, government or research, you must hold both an ‘aerial works permission’ and a ‘permission to operate an RPAS in Irish airspace’. Both of these permissions must come from the IAA. In other words, IAA classifies your unmanned aircraft by what you do with it.
Do I need insurance to operate my RPAS?
If you intend to use an RPAS for commercial purposes, you must have a third party liability insurance policy covering the operation of the system which is acceptable to the IAA.
This does not apply to the operators of RPAS who are using the aircraft purely for recreational purposes. However, the IAA would strongly encourage such users to secure third party liability insurance.
